What Is Diffusion free essay sample
A distinguishing feature of diffusion is that it results in mixing or mass transport, without requiring bulk motion. Thus, diffusion should not be confused with convection, or advections, which are other transport mechanisms that utilize bulk motion to move particles from one place to another. In Latin, diffundere means to spread out. There are two ways to introduce the notion of diffusion: either a phenomenological approach starting with Ficks laws of diffusion and their mathematical consequences, or a physical and atomistic one, by considering the random walk of the diffusing particles. Diffusion is the process by which a characteristic spreads across space from one place to another over time. It is the process of dissemination. Diffusion causes ideas and different cultural customs to be spread from one place to another. This makes the world more culturally diverse. There are many types of diffusion: contagious, hierarchical, stimulus, and relocation. These types of diffusions are seen in trends, ideas, transportation, and communication systems. We will write a custom essay sample on What Is Diffusion? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For example, it allows the world to watch events on television and transportation to travel and spread ideas from place to place. Forms of Expansion Diffusion Expansion diffusion is idea or innovation spreads outward from the hearth. Contagious Diffusion Contagious diffusion is the rapid, widespread diffusion of a characteristic throughout the population. Ideas that are spread through contagious diffusion are spread throughout the population like the flue would. It starts with one person or place and it keeps spreading until it is worldwide. Ideas that spread through contagious diffusion start in a populated area, then other cities adopt the idea and it keeps spreading from there. Unlike hierarchical diffusion, everyone picks up on the trend and idea around the same time causing it to become contagious, like a wave on the crowd. It starts from a ââ¬Å"centerâ⬠or hearth and diffuses out from there to the rest of the population. Contagious diffusion goes along with many ideas that relate to popular culture each year. Hierarchical Diffusion Hierarchical diffusion is the spread of an idea from persons or nodes of authority or power to other persons or place. This type of diffusion usually results in import authority figures in a community such as a political leader or socially elite people. Also, the trend or idea starts in a major city, then the other cities follow a while after. This type of diffusion usually starts in a populated early and slowly diffuses to less and less populated areas. An example of this would be architecture. This is because it may start in a certain area of the world, then someone from that country moves and builds that same style in another area which spreads through the rest of that area and so on and so forth. Another example is hip hop and rap. It started from low-income African Americans in urban areas and diffused from there. Another example is ââ¬Å"command centersâ⬠in New York, Tokyo, and London employ modern telecommunications to send out their orders to factories, shops, and research centers. Stimulus Diffusion Stimulus diffusion is the spread of an underlying principle, even though a characteristic itself apparently fails to diffuse. Also, an idea or innovation sparked by an idea that diffused in from another culture. The specific trait may be rejected, but the underlying concept is accepted. The concept is often rejected for cultural reasons. This diffusion occurs when an idea or product arenââ¬â¢t being completely diffused throughout the population. Also, this it is when the basic idea or trend is being diffused, but not the exact idea or trend is spread because of the region it spread to. An example of this would be McDonaldââ¬â¢s diffusing to India. This is because Hindus donââ¬â¢t eat cows because they believe they are holy, so they replace the meat in the burgers and make them veggie burgers. Relocation Diffusion Relocation diffusion is the spread of an idea through physical movement of people from one place to another. Also, itââ¬â¢s movement of individuals who carry an idea or innovation with them to a new, perhaps distant locale. This is caused when people migrate from place to place and bring their culture with them. This is the cause for many different languages being in one area, such as the United States. Not only is language is diffused, but religion and ethnicity as well. An example of this would be the spread of AIDs. This is because it was an outbreak in one area and a person in that area moved to another and continued to spread it.

Photographer Gordon Parks
Photographer Gordon Parks Biography One of the 20th centuryââ¬â¢s greatest photographers Gordon Parks was born in 1912 to the family of Africans of photographs The foremost feature of Parksââ¬â¢ photographs is the fact that, while being taken in an unmistakably realist manner, they emanate the strong spirit of humanism. The validity of this statement can be well explored in regards to probably the photographerââ¬â¢s most famous photo of Ella Watson (janitor) standing in front of the American flag inside of the FSA building. What is being particularly noteworthy about this photo is that it prompts onlookers to consider the possibility that, working as a janitor, was not the photographed womanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëtrue callingââ¬â¢. The reason for this is apparent ââ¬â Watsonââ¬â¢s very appearance suggests that she happened to be a thoroughly intelligent woman. The fact that she is being depicted wearing glasses strengthens this impression even further. Thus, while being exposed to this photo, pe ople cannot help experiencing the sensation that there is something inheritably wrong about the situation with an intelligent Black woman working as a janitor, which in turn leads them to conclude that she must have been forced to stick with this job by some external circumstances. The American flag in the background symbolizes these external circumstances. Apparently, Parks wanted to emphasize that it was due to the policy of racial discrimination (which was enacted in America during the course of the thirties) that African-American women, such as Watson, could not even dream of a social advancement.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Photographer Gordon Parks specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The motif of racial discrimination is also contained in the Parksââ¬â¢ photo of two Black kids playing the doll of a White girl. There are two discursive aspects to this photo. First, the fact that Black children are being fo rced to play with this pale-skinned doll suggests that they were spared of an opportunity to play with a Black doll. The reason for this is simple ââ¬â at the time when the above photo was taken (the late thirties), there were no dark-skinned dolls manufactured by the American toy-industry. This is because, during the course of this period in American history, the countryââ¬â¢s Blacks were not considered fully human, which is why they used to be encouraged to mimic the lifestyle of Whites ââ¬â playing with White dolls, was meant to make Black children emotionally comfortable with their future status of second-class citizens. Second, the dollââ¬â¢s unemotional (cold) facial expression stands in a striking contrast to the facial expression of a Black kid on the left. This contrastââ¬â¢s symbolism is quite clear ââ¬â apparently, Parks wanted to promote the idea that it is in White peopleââ¬â¢s very nature to regard African-Americans inferior, which is why it is wrong to believe that Whites would be willing to treat brothers with dignity, unless they are being forced to do so out of fear. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to suggest that the objective value of Parksââ¬â¢ photographic masterpieces reflects the authorââ¬â¢s tendency to expose racist injustices within the American society in a necessarily subtle manner. Quite on the contrary ââ¬â Parks never skipped an opportunity to document even those instances of a racial discrimination in America that have been directly sponsored by the state. The photograph below validates the legitimacy of this suggestion. Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More On it, we get to observe a Black girl drinking out of the water-fountain, designated ââ¬Ëcolored onlyââ¬â¢, with the water-fountain designated ââ¬Ëwhite onlyââ¬â¢ being only a few inches away. Given the ââ¬Ëpoodle skirtsââ¬â¢, worn by two Black ladies on the right, we can well assume that this photo must have been taken during the course of the fifties in one of the Americaââ¬â¢s Southern states, where the so-called ââ¬ËJim Crowââ¬â¢ laws enjoyed the legislative legitimacy well into the early sixties. It is needless to mention, of course, that this photo can be well discussed in terms of a social commentary. It appears that Parks wanted to prompt contemporary Black onlookers to consider something that they have not been taught in schools, ran by White Bible-thumpers ââ¬â namely, the fact they had very few reasons to remain loyal to the state, which was willing to go as far as denying their basic humanity, simply because they happened to have a dark ski n. Therefore, it is fully explainable why, as time went on; Parks was growing increasingly distanced from the idea that African-Americans simply had to continue applying an effort into trying to make Whites more racially tolerant, as Martin Luther King used to insist. Apparently, during the course of the sixties, it started to dawn upon Parks that, contrary to what King was suggesting, civil rights are not given but taken. In its turn, this explains why through the sixties Parks was becoming progressively fascinated with the Black Panther Party, in general, and with the character of Malcolm X, in particular. The fact that Parks used to spend long hours, while photographing the partyââ¬â¢s political rallies, headed by Malcolm X, validates the full soundness of this suggestion. There can only a few doubts as to the fact that there is a strongly defined social commentary to the above photos, which can be summarized as follows: African-Americans have grown powerful enough to take a direct action against their oppressors. As these photos imply, such an eventual development occurred due to African-Americans having succeeded in making the traditional ââ¬Ëinstrumentsââ¬â¢ of White peopleââ¬â¢s racial domination (their efficiency in self-organization and their intellectual capabilities) to serve the purpose of Black peopleââ¬â¢s liberation. This is the subtle symbolism of Parksââ¬â¢ photos, which feature Black Panthers standing in columns and Malcolm X touching its temple with his finger. At the same time, however, it would be quite inappropriate to suggest that there are solely racial undertones to how Parks went about photographing the surrounding reality. Being a true humanist, Parks used to make a deliberate point in exposing the very essence of peopleââ¬â¢s existential anxieties ââ¬â regardless of what happened to be the specifics of the photographed individualsââ¬â¢ racial affiliation. In this respect, the photo below is being espec ially illustrative. Even though that, formally speaking, this photo simply depicts three blood-related females (a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter) that live in the same household, it in fact encourages viewers to contemplate on the shortness of oneââ¬â¢s life. This is because the depicted characters allow onlookers to have a three-dimensional glimpse into the process of aging. The photoââ¬â¢s humanist appeal is quite apparent ââ¬â once people realize the shortness of their lives, they will be more likely to try to make these lives count, such as by the mean of contributing to the well-being of a community, for example. Personal reflections and reactions I personally have always been a great admirer of Gordon Parks. The rationale behind this suggestion can be summarized as follows: 1. Parks contributed substantially towards the process of African-Americans becoming the masters of their own destiny. It is not only that Parks succeeded in exposing the subtle and direct manifestations of White racism, which helped the brothers to adopt a proper approach, while addressing it, but his photographic masterpieces also resulted in prompting the representatives of socially underprivileged racial minorities in America to take a full advantage of their existential potential. One of the reasons for this is that, even though many of the depicted ââ¬Ëcoloredââ¬â¢ characters in his photos appear to have suffered from poverty and racial discrimination, there is an unmistakable aura of a perceptual optimism to them. Hence, a subtle message, conveyed by most of the Parksââ¬â¢ photos ââ¬â despite the fact that Blacks/minors do often experience social/racial oppression, they nevertheless possess something that their oppressors no longer have ââ¬â a psychological and biological vitality. In this respect, Parks proved himself a true visionary ââ¬â as of today, African-Americans have effectively ceased being ââ¬Ëhuntedââ¬â¢, while gradually assuming the role of ââ¬Ëhuntersââ¬â¢. The validity of this suggestion can be easily illustrated in regards to what account for the realities of todayââ¬â¢s living in America, associated with the process of Whites growing progressively weakened, when it is being only the matter of time before they themselves become the representatives of the one of many of racial minorities in this country. 2. In his personal life, Parks never ceased acting as a humble and yet self-respectful individual, while never succumbing to bitterness even in times when the circumstances called for it. Being a stoic-minded person, Parks used to address life-challenges as a man, without allowing the hardships he used to experience to prevent him from remaining firmly committed to what he believed was the purpose of his life (Moskowitz 103). Parks felt thoroughly comfortable while socializing with both: Black gangsters, on the one hand, and with the Americaââ¬â¢s top-politicians, on the other. This o nce again suggests that there was nothing incidental about the fact that, despite his humble origins, Parks was able to overcome the seemingly impossible circumstances and to become one of the 20th centuryââ¬â¢s most influential African-Americans. Therefore, it would be thoroughly appropriate to refer to Parks as a truly inspirational figure, whose cultural legacy will continue to motivate African-Americans make the best out of their lives for generations to come. 3. Parks was a great humanist/intellectual. As it was noted earlier, many of the Parksââ¬â¢ photos are being concerned with promoting the idea that oneââ¬â¢s life represents the highest value of all. At the same time, however, Parks never consider joining any of the organized religions in America ââ¬â hence, proving himself a classical intellectual, capable of understanding that it is specifically peopleââ¬â¢s lack of education, which prompts them to search for ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠up in the clouds. Thus, it c an be well assumed that, throughout most of his life, Parks remained well ahead of its time. Therefore, it is fully explainable why the overwhelming majority of intellectually advanced Americans tend to refer to Parks in a particularly high regard ââ¬â regardless of whether they happened to be Black or White. Thus, it will be fully appropriate, on my part, to conclude this paper by suggesting that, as time goes on, Parksââ¬â¢ cultural legacy will continue to affect the lives of more and more Americans ââ¬â the very laws of a historical progress establish objective preconditions for this to be the case. Organize Your Digital Genealogy Photos Files
Organize Your Digital Genealogy Photos Files If you use a computer in your genealogy research- and who doesnt!- then you likely have a large collection of digital research files. Digital photos, downloaded census records or wills, scanned documents, emails... If youre like me, however, they end up scattered in various folders throughout your computer, despite your best efforts. This can really complicate matters when you need to locate a specific photo or track down an email. As with any organization project, there are several different ways to organize your digital genealogy files. Begin by thinking about the way you work and the types of files that you collect in the course of your genealogy research. Sort Your Files Digital genealogy files are easier to organize if you first get them sorted by type. Spend some time searching your computer files for anything related to genealogy. Look in your My Documents (or Documents) folder and sub-folders for text files, photos, downloaded files, and other genealogy documents. Use your file explorer (e.g. Windows Explorer, Finder) to search for documents using keywords such as surnames, record types, etc. A number of free file search tools are also available that offer additional search features. Check My Pictures, or other folder where you store your photos, for any digital or scanned photos or documents. You can also search using common image file extensions such as .jpg, .png or .tiff. Open your genealogy software program to learn where it stores its related files. They may be in the same folder as your genealogy software program (often under Program Files). This may include your genealogy software file, as well as any reports youve created or photos or documents youve imported into your software program. If you have downloaded any files, they may be in a Downloads, or similarly named folder.Open your email program and do a search for genealogy-related emails as well. These are often easier to organize if you copy and paste them into a word processing document or your genealogy software. Once youve located your digital genealogy files you have a number of choices. You can choose to leave them in their original locations and create an organization log to keep track of the files, or you can copy or move them into a more central location.à Log Your Digital Genealogy Files If you prefer to leave your files in their original locations on your computer, or if you are just the super-organized type, then a log may be the way to go. This is an easy method to maintain because you dont really have to worry about where things end up on your computer - you just make a note of it. A digital file log helps simplify the process of locating a particular photograph, digitized document, or other genealogy file. Use the table feature in your word processing program or a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel to create a log for your genealogy files. Include columns for the following: file name (including its extension) and datelocation on your computera brief description of the filenames of the primary individual(s) or geographical area(s) in the filephysical location of the original document or photo (if applicable). If you backup your digital files to DVD, USB drive, or other digital media, then include the name/number of and physical location of that media in the file location column.à Reorganize the Files on Your Computer If a file log is too hard for you to keep up, or doesnt meet all of your needs, then another method of keeping track of your digital genealogy files is to physically reorganize them on your computer. If you dont already have one, create a folder called Genealogy or Family Research to contain all of your genealogy files. I have mine as a sub-folder in my Documents folder (also backed up to my Dropbox account). Under the Genealogy folder, you can create sub-folders for places and surnames you are researching. If you use a particular physical filing system, you may want to follow the same organization on your computer. If you have a large number of files under a particular folder, then you may choose to create another level of sub-folders organized by date or document type. For example, I have a folder for my OWENS research. Within this folder I have a subfolder for photos and subfolders for each county in which Im researching this family. Within the county folders, I have subfolders fo r record types, as well as a main Research folder where I maintain my research notes. The Genealogy folder on your computer is also a good place to keep a backup copy of your genealogy software, although you should also keep an additional backup copy offline. By keeping your genealogy files in one central location on your computer, you make it easier to locate important research quickly. It also simplifies backup of your genealogy files.à Use Software Designed for Organization An alternative to the do-it-yourself method is to use a program designed for organizing computer files. Cloozà An organization program designed specifically for genealogists,à Cloozà is billed as an electronic filing cabinet. The software includes templates for entering information from a variety of standard genealogical documents such as census records, as well as photos, correspondence, and other genealogical records. You can import and attach a digital copy of the original photo or document to each template if you wish. Reports can be generated to show all documents contained in Clooz for a specific individual or record type. Photo Album Softwareà If your digital photos are scattered across your computer and on a collection of DVDs or external drives, aà digital photo organizer such as Adobe Photoshop Elements or Google Photosà can come to the rescue. These programs scan your hard drive and catalog every photo found there. Some also have the ability to catalog photos found on other networked computers or external drives. The organization of these images varies from program to program, but most organize the photos by date. A keyword feature allows you to add tags to your photos such as a specific surname, location, or keyword to make them easy to find at any time. My tombstone photos, for example, are tagged with the word cemetery, plus the name of the particular cemetery, the location of the cemetery and the surname of the individual. This gives me four different ways to easily find the same picture. One last method of organization for digital files is to import them all into your genealogy software program. Photos and digitized documents can be added to many family tree programs through a scrapbook feature. Some can even be attached as sources. Emails and text files can be copied and pasted into the notes field for the individuals to which they pertain. This system is nice if you have a small family tree, but can get a bit cumbersome if you have a large number of documents and photos which apply to more than one person. No matter what organization system you choose for your computer genealogy files, the trick is to use it consistently. Pick a system and stick to it and youll never have trouble finding a document again.à One last perk to digital genealogy - it helps eliminate some of the paper clutter!
